Planting Instructions:
Tacca chantrieri (Black Bat Flower) grow from rhizomes and can be grown outdoors in warmer climates or in pots.
In pots: Choose a pot that is at least 12-18 inches in diameter and depth. Good drainage is crucial. Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. An orchid mix or a mix amended with perlite and bark works well. Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for tropical plants. Ensure your container has drainage holes. Place some gravel or broken pot shards at the bottom to further improve drainage. Fill the container about two-thirds full with the potting mix and position the rhizome horizontally on top of the soil. Ensure any existing growth points (eyes or small shoots) are facing upwards. Cover the rhizome with about 1-2 inches of potting mix.
Water: Water the potting mix thoroughly until water drains out the bottom of the pot. Avoid overwatering, especially initially. The soil should be consistently moist but not soggy.
Tacca prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east or north-facing window is usually ideal indoors. If outdoors, choose a shady spot.
Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures, ideally between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations. Humidity: Bat flowers especially appreciate high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the pot on a pebble tray filled with water, or grouping it with other plants.
Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but also avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Adjust watering based on the season and your local climate.
